FROM THE FRONT LINES:
VOICES OF VIRGINIA’S AGENCY-DIRECTED PERSONAL CARE PROVIDERS

Virginia’s agency-directed personal care providers are a critical part of our communities. These caregivers are a lifeline for Virginians who choose to receive community-based care instead of institutionalized care. They enable recipients to participate in activities of daily living (ADLs), remain medically stable and stay connected in their communities, which is beneficial for physical and emotional health. Read their stories below.
Kristy Wheeler, Waynesboro
“For sixteen years, I’ve provided in-home care for those who need it but still want to live in their homes.
I am fulfilled every day by seeing my patients happy and comfortable because they are allowed to remain at home and receive their care there.” Kristy Wheeler, Waynesboro
“I would not ever turn down a need if I can fill it. It is part of who I am. I am so fulfilled by my job when clients tell me, ‘I am so glad you’re here, I trust you with everything I got, I don’t worry when you are here.’ That is all I can ask for in a job – and I know I am truly making a difference in the lives of our clients.” Linda Taylor, Pulaski
“One of the best parts about my job is seeing clients smile and hearing the thanks from family members when they see how happy and cared for their loved ones are.” Ruby Rose, Roanoke

“I love my job because of the people I meet. I love to help my clients and I also love to learn from them. Recently, I was working for a client whose degree was in history and had a special interest in WW2. It was so enlightening to learn new historic facts from her.” Mariama Mansaray, Alexandria
Faisal Ssempagama, Chesterfield
“I have always had a passion for caring and that is what led me to this career. It warms my heart to see when my work is appreciated by clients and to know I am truly helping them.”
Faisal Ssempagama, Chesterfield
“Caregiving is in my nature and I have a passion for helping others. I’m fulfilled by doing my best to ensure the safety, happiness, and health of my clients, and building relationships with my clients and their family to assure them that their loved ones are in good caring hands.” Brandi Strickland, Newport News
“I love being able to put a smile on sick people’s faces. Recently, I was so proud when I cleaned a client’s apartment and she was finally able to safely move around after my assistance cleaning.”
